Feeding a bee colony
How much feed does a colony need for winter?
Biodlarna, the Swedish beekeepers’ association, reckons on at least 15 kilos of sugar for a normal-sized colony. That is the weight of the sugar, not of the syrup — a 3:2 syrup weighs more than that.
A weak colony needs less, a strong one more. Weigh the hive rather than guess: the difference between September and November is what the bees have eaten, and that number tells you more than any table.
Syrup, ready-made feed or fondant?
Syrup you mix yourself. It is the cheapest and you know exactly what is in it, but the bees have to drive off the water before they cap the cells, and that is work late in the season.
Ready-made feed is sold as inverted syrup. The sugar is already split, so the colony is spared that step — which is the whole reason to pay more for the bucket.
Fondant is solid and taken slowly. It belongs on the frames as a reserve once the cold has come and syrup is no longer taken, and in spring when a colony is short of stores but should not be driven into brood rearing.
When to feed
Autumn feeding belongs to August and September. The winter bees are raised then, and they are the bees that carry the colony through to spring — what they get now shows in March.
Late feed is worse feed. Once the nights turn cold the bees stop taking syrup, and a hive with spillage around it invites robbing. Feed in the afternoon, spill nothing, and close up properly.
Spring is a different job: stimulative feeding pushes brood rearing, support feeding saves a colony that is running empty. The same fondant, two different purposes.
What supplements in the feed do
Sugar is energy and nothing else. Pollen is the protein, and a colony without pollen cuts back on brood however much syrup it is given.
Supplements — vitamins, amino acids, probiotics, prebiotics — are stirred into the syrup or given on the fondant. They do not replace pollen and they are not medicines. They support the colony’s own gut flora and its strength during build-up, which is exactly what a colony needs while it is raising winter bees.
