The one that does nothing you can see
Bion is a prebiotic, and a prebiotic is not something that acts on the bee. It is food for the bacteria already living in the bee’s gut — the ones doing the actual work — so that they build up in balance rather than in whatever order a hard spring happens to leave them.
Which matters most at precisely the wrong moment. A colony coming out of winter has the most delicate gut it will have all year, and the first syrup of the season is the heaviest thing you will ask it to digest.
It feeds the workers you never see. Nothing in the bottle works on the bee directly. It feeds the population in the gut that does — which is why the effect is indirect, and why this is the one most often left out of the bucket.
Out of winter is the fragile moment. Bees that have just come through a winter have the least robust digestion of the year, and the year’s heaviest feed is what arrives first.
Digestion sits upstream of everything. Brood feeding, build-up, the pace of the whole spring — all of it runs on what the colony gets out of what it eats, rather than on what you put in the bucket.
A bee’s own defences run through its gut. That much is well established in the research on honey bee gut microbiomes: the flora is part of how a bee holds itself together. So feeding the flora is feeding what the bee defends itself with. The feeding is this product’s part; the defending is the bee’s.
A quiet product: nothing about it shows on the day. Natural, and no residue in honey or comb.
Into cooled syrup, never hot — below 30–40 °C. Heat destroys live cultures and enzymes, and syrup you have just made is far too warm.
We would feed it in the same syrup as Vita Bee Vitamin and Cont Bee Gut Regulator.

Common questions
- Does it contain anything of animal origin?
- The manufacturer declares this product to be entirely of plant and mineral origin, containing no ingredients of animal origin — no honey, milk, meat, egg, animal protein or animal fat.
- Does it leave any residue in the honey?
- No. The products leave no residue in honey or comb, so a treated colony still produces honey you can harvest and sell normally.
- Can I use it during the honey flow?
- Yes. Because nothing carries over into the honey, they can be used during the flow rather than only in the gaps between harvests.
- How often can it be used?
- They can be used continuously through the season and repeated season after season — there is no withdrawal period to plan around and no rotation requirement.
- The product has a smell — is something wrong?
- No, that is expected. The products are naturally made and contain fermented ingredients, which can give off a noticeable smell. Bees find it attractive rather than off-putting — it is a scent they seek out.
- How long does it keep, and how should it be stored?
- Each pack carries a recommended use-by date, generally 24 months from manufacture. Keep it in its original packaging between 5 and 20 °C, out of direct sunlight. The smell and any settling may change over time — that belongs to a naturally produced, fermented product.
- Can I return an opened product?
- No. For health and hygiene reasons, a product whose own vented plastic cap or inner packet has been opened cannot be returned (EU Consumer Rights Directive art. 16). The outer shipping box does not count — you may open the parcel and look at the goods. Products with their own seal intact can be returned within 14 days.
