Why you might put the smoker down

Smoke works by frightening the colony. The bees read it as fire and start filling themselves with honey — the reflex is immediate, and it is not a small meal. That is what every puff costs, and on a long day, tired and behind, it is easy to give more than you meant to.

Above 15 °C you can do the same job with this instead. The bees settle, move out of your way and go back to what they were doing — without the alarm, and without eating their way through stores they had no reason to touch.

  • The honey stays in the hive. A smoked colony gorges. It is a reflex rather than a decision, and it happens again at every hive you open. Nothing here sets it off.

  • Above 15 °C. That is the condition, and it covers most of the days you would be in the hives anyway. Warm enough that a fine spray is a non-event for the bees.

  • Harder to overdo. Smoke is difficult to dose when you are tired and working fast. This is not — there is no way to give a colony too much of a fright with it.

It is natural and leaves no residue, and what you are spraying is the vitamin-enriched mix the product is named for. A good day in the apiary is usually a good day for the beekeeper; this is one of the few places it is a good day for the colony too.

This one is for the moment of opening. For the whole stretch around a Demaree, a split or a harvest — and for going into the syrup rather than onto the bees — there is Dr. Gost Bee Calming Vitamin.

Common questions

Does it contain anything of animal origin?
The manufacturer declares this product to be entirely of plant and mineral origin, containing no ingredients of animal origin — no honey, milk, meat, egg, animal protein or animal fat.
Does it leave any residue in the honey?
No. The products leave no residue in honey or comb, so a treated colony still produces honey you can harvest and sell normally.
Can I use it during the honey flow?
Yes. Because nothing carries over into the honey, they can be used during the flow rather than only in the gaps between harvests.
How often can it be used?
They can be used continuously through the season and repeated season after season — there is no withdrawal period to plan around and no rotation requirement.
The product has a smell — is something wrong?
No, that is expected. The products are naturally made and contain fermented ingredients, which can give off a noticeable smell. Bees find it attractive rather than off-putting — it is a scent they seek out.
How long does it keep, and how should it be stored?
Each pack carries a recommended use-by date, generally 24 months from manufacture. Keep it in its original packaging between 5 and 20 °C, out of direct sunlight. The smell and any settling may change over time — that belongs to a naturally produced, fermented product.
Can I return an opened product?
No. For health and hygiene reasons, a product whose own vented plastic cap or inner packet has been opened cannot be returned (EU Consumer Rights Directive art. 16). The outer shipping box does not count — you may open the parcel and look at the goods. Products with their own seal intact can be returned within 14 days.
