Carniolan or Buckfast: Choosing a Bee for a Swedish Season

One of them is a natural subspecies and the other was built by a monk — and that difference, not temperament or yield, is what decides your second season. Spring behaviour, swarming, wintering above 59° N, and the honest answer on mite resistance.
Two names come up whenever a Swedish beekeeper buys a mated queen: Carnica and Buckfast. Almost everything written about them compares temperament and honey yield, which is the least useful comparison, because both are gentle and both make honey.
The difference that decides your next three seasons is elsewhere, and it starts with something people get wrong about what these two actually are.
One is a subspecies. The other is a construction.
Carnica — Apis mellifera carnica, the Carniolan — is a natural subspecies. It evolved in the mountains of Slovenia, Austria and the northern Balkans, in a climate of hard winters and a short, violent spring. Nobody designed it. It is what a bee becomes when the season is brutal and brief.
Buckfast is not a subspecies at all. It was built. Brother Adam at Buckfast Abbey spent decades crossing Italian, Anatolian, Carniolan, Greek and other stock, selecting for a bee that was productive, calm and disease-tolerant, and the result is a composite — a construction with no wild population behind it.
This is not pedantry, and it is not a criticism of Buckfast. It is the single most practical fact in the comparison, because it decides what happens to your bees in year two.
A Carnica queen's daughters are recognisably Carnica. A Buckfast queen's daughters are a lottery.
The F2 problem, which is the real Buckfast question
A bought F1 Buckfast queen is, by common account, one of the calmest bees you can keep. Reports of the opposite almost always concern the generation after.
When that queen swarms, is superseded, or you raise a daughter from her, the new queen mates with whatever drones are flying within a few kilometres. In a composite, the traits that were combined by careful selection come apart again — and the F2 colony can be defensive, "runny" on the comb, and unpleasant to inspect. The bee you paid for was real. It just did not breed true, because it was never going to.
The practical consequence for a hobbyist with two or three hives: with Buckfast, plan to requeen from a breeder. If your plan is to let the bees replace their own queens, Carnica will hold its character far better under open mating — which is not a claim that Carnica is superior, only that it is more predictable in the hands of someone not running a mating station.
Spring: the trait that cuts both ways
Carnica builds explosively. It reads the first real warmth and commits, throwing brood at the season with everything it has. In its home mountains that is exactly right: the window is narrow and you take it.
Buckfast builds steadily and keeps building, on a longer, flatter curve.
A Swedish spring does not reward either strategy cleanly, because a Swedish spring does not arrive so much as negotiate — over 13 °C, the colony commits, and then it drops back for a week. Carnica's decisiveness is a real advantage when the flow comes early and hard, and a real exposure when the weather takes the warmth back and there is more brood in the box than there are bees to keep it warm and fed.
Which is why the feeding question matters more here than further south, whichever race you keep. The colony's decision is made on what it can find; if there is nothing to find, the decision goes the wrong way.
Swarming: Carnica's spring has a price
The swarm drive is the other side of that explosive build-up, and it is the most-cited complaint about Carnica. A colony that expands that fast reaches the decision to reproduce sooner, and it will make swarm preparations at the first hint of a flow if you leave it space to think about it.
Buckfast's low swarming tendency is one of the traits Brother Adam selected for hardest, and it is the reason commercial operators favour it: a colony that stays put is a colony that fills supers.
For a beekeeper with a few hives and a job, this is worth weighing honestly. Carnica asks for inspections on a schedule during May and June. Miss two in a row and you may be watching your bees leave.
Temperament: both gentle, in different ways
Both are gentle, and the distinction between them is about behaviour rather than aggression.
Carnica is usually described as sedate: the bees stay on the comb, carry on working, and barely acknowledge that the box is open. Buckfast is busy and focused — a bee that gets on with the job rather than one that ignores you.
Neither is a bee you need to fear. Both, on a bad day in late summer with a robbing pressure and no flow, will tell you so.
Honey: it depends on the shape of your season, not the size
The claim that Buckfast yields more is true in a particular context — long, diverse, heavy flows, where a prolific queen and a colony that keeps building can exploit a season that keeps giving.
Carnica is built for the opposite shape: short and intense. It reaches peak population fast, dumps it into a narrow flow, and shuts down.
Most Swedish seasons are the second shape. Rapeseed early and hard, then a summer flow, then heather in some regions — punctuated by weather rather than continuous. That is a Carnica-shaped year more often than a Buckfast-shaped one, though this varies enormously by where in Sweden you are, and a Skåne season and a Norrland season have very little to do with each other.
Wintering: where the north actually decides it
This is the section that matters most above 59° N, and it is where Carnica's origins show.
Carnica shuts down fast. It reads the end of the season, stops brood rearing early, and goes into winter as a comparatively small cluster that eats very little. Frugality through a long winter is not a minor trait when the winter is five months long.
Buckfast keeps brood rearing later into the autumn and winters as a larger cluster, which consumes more. In a mild winter that consumption can outpace the stores you left. The larger cluster is an advantage in cold — more bees, more heat — but it is an advantage you have to feed.
Neither is wrong. But the further north you are, the more the Carnica pattern looks like it was designed for the place, because it was.
Disease and immunity: the honest answer
This is where most comparisons drift into wishful thinking, so here is the flat version.
Neither race is varroa-resistant. Not Carnica, not Buckfast. Both need a treatment regime, both will collapse without one, and choosing between them on the basis of mite tolerance is choosing on a difference that is not there.
What does exist is line-level selection. Hygienic behaviour and VSH (varroa-sensitive hygiene) are heritable traits that specific breeding programmes select for, in both Carnica and Buckfast lines. A colony from a breeder selecting for hygienic behaviour may genuinely differ from one that is not — but that is a fact about the breeder, not about the race, and the label on the queen cage tells you nothing about it.
Brother Adam did select for disease tolerance, and Buckfast's reputation for resilience is not invented — it came out of a period when acarine mites were devastating British stock. But that is tracheal mite history, not varroa.
If your goal is mite management, your treatment plan and your monitoring discipline will outweigh your choice of race by a wide margin.
The third bee, which most comparisons leave out
Sweden has a native honey bee: the Nordic dark bee, Apis mellifera mellifera. It is a conservation subject here, with protected breeding areas, and it is adapted to this climate in a way neither of the others is by origin.
There is real evidence for that adaptation rather than just sentiment. A study of native mellifera and Buckfast drones in southwestern Sweden found ecological differences indicating local adaptation in the native bee. It is slower to build, less prolific, and generally yields less honey — and it is the bee that has actually lived through this climate for thousands of years.
Whether it suits you depends on what you want from beekeeping. It deserves to be in the comparison.
What actually decides it, for most people
Not the traits. Three practical things:
Can you buy a mated queen locally? A queen that arrives alive and mated from someone an hour away beats a theoretically superior queen posted from another country. Ask your local beekeeping association what people near you are keeping — and what they can sell you in May.
Will you requeen, or let them do it? If you intend to let your colonies raise their own queens and mate them locally, Carnica gives you a more predictable second generation. If you will buy F1 queens from a breeder every couple of years, Buckfast's traits are yours to keep.
What does your season look like? Short and sharp favours Carnica. Long and generous favours Buckfast. Look at your own honey records rather than at a national average — Sweden is 1,500 kilometres long and the answer changes on the way up.
And whichever you choose: neither race can build a colony out of nothing in a cold, late spring. What is available to them in April decides more than what is written on the queen cage.
Sources, and how much weight to give each
It is worth being clear about which parts of this rest on published research and which rest on the accumulated experience of people who keep bees, because they are not the same kind of evidence.
Peer-reviewed. The claim that the native Nordic dark bee shows genuine local adaptation here — rather than only sentimental attachment — comes from a study of native Apis mellifera mellifera and Buckfast drones in southwestern Sweden, which found ecological differences indicating local adaptation in the native bee: Ecological comparison of native and hybrid honeybee drones in southwestern Sweden. That Carnica is a distinct natural subspecies with its own evolutionary history, rather than a bred line, is supported by genomic work including a complete annotated mitochondrial genome of the Carniolan honeybee from Slovenia.
Beekeeping literature and breeder practice. The trait comparisons — spring build-up curves, swarm drive, temperament on the comb, wintering consumption, the F2 breakdown after open mating — are the settled consensus of breeders and beekeeping associations rather than the output of controlled trials. They are reliable enough to plan around and specific enough to be useful, but they are experience aggregated over decades, not a measured effect size. Anyone who tells you a race difference has been quantified to a percentage is overselling it.

Where this article is most opinionated — that mite resistance is a line-level trait rather than a race-level one, and that your treatment discipline outweighs your race choice — that is a judgement, and it is the one we would most like to be challenged on by someone with data.
